Know a high school student who lives in Algoma District hopes to don a lab coat or field boots to study the environment this fall? Give them a nudge towards a Clean North scholarship! We are offering two $500 awards—one for a soon-to-be college student and one for a student that is university-bound.
Why environmental scholarships?
“From climate change and air pollution to microplastics, invasive species, and vanishing biodiversity, the planet is facing serious challenges,” says Clean North Vice Chair Peter McLarty, who coordinates the scholarship program. “Now more than ever, we need driven, passionate people to roll up their sleeves and take on the environmental challenges of our time.”
These scholarships support future changemakers, encourage local impact by fostering a new generation of green leaders in our community, and help make higher education more accessible to students who might otherwise be held back by financial barriers.
Who is eligible?
In addition to graduating from a high school in Algoma District this year, applicants must:
- Be in good academic standing
- Be accepted/enrolled full time in an Ontario university or college environmental studies program for the coming academic year
- Have a record of community service/extracurricular activities
McLarty notes that environmental studies includes a broad range of disciplines—environmental science, natural resources, ecology, environmental engineering, conservation biology, sustainable development, environmental law and justice, environmental education, climatology, and more.
