Composting

Clean North strongly encourages the people of Sault Ste. Marie/Algoma to compost at home, and we want to help! We have guides to both outdoor composting and indoor worm composting, and we sell worm composting kits. FYI, composting can be as simple as dumping produce scraps, leaves, etc. in a hole or pile in a corner of your yard to having a complicated three-bin set up. You can even compost indoors with the Bokashi system (which allows you to compost meat, dairy and bones, too) or worm composting (we sell worm composting kits!).

Composting is a great family activity as well. It’s a tool for teaching about gardening, recycling, decomposition, waste reduction, climate change, and more.

Resources to help you get started

Why compost?

  • Compost is a fantastic (and free!) soil amendment, adding nutrients and improving soil texture and its ability to retain moisture.
  • Compost allows you to use less chemical fertilizer, helping to keep our neighbourhoods and ground water cleaner and safer.
  • Sending organic waste to our landfills is putting a lot of pressure on them. As much as 40% of the waste that Canadian households send to the landfill is organic (comes from plants or animals). The Sault Ste. Marie landfill is nearing the end of its life, and it will cost taxpayers many millions to expand or replace.
  • When organic waste breaks down in landfills, it produces methane, which is a many times more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide is. Composting reduces methane emissions.
  • Less trash going to the landfill means fewer trucks on the road so less fuel-related carbon dioxide going into the air.
