Volunteers collect more than 3,200 kg of litter this fall

Local volunteers picked up more then 3,200 kilograms of litter this fall, as part of a rejuvenated litter cleanup program launched by Clean North in partnership with the Voyageur Trail Association and Sault Naturalists.

Removing litter from trailheads and natural areas in and around the Sault is important for several reasons:

  • Litter can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals such as lead, which can leach into the soil and end up in our lakes, rivers, and groundwater.
  • Metal objects, broken glass, cans with jagged edges, and needles can pose a health/injury hazard to both people and wildlife.
  • Litter detracts from people being able to enjoy our trails and natural areas.
  • Lots of litter also can make people feel unsafe and negative about our community.
