What are the true costs of mining the Ring of Fire?

Mining appears to offer major economic benefits…but what if all the social and economic costs are not being factored in, leaving communities and individuals to bear heavy burdens?

Author and MiningWatch Canada co-founder Joan Kuyek has a response to that question. You can hear her take at 7 pm on January 30 at the Water Tower Inn, as she speaks about the social and economic costs of mining with a focus on the Ring of Fire and related initiatives, such as the ferrochrome smelter proposed for the Sault.

Kuyek will touch on her new book entitled Unearthing Justice: How to Protect Your Community from the Mining Industry. In this book, she challenges the rosy image the mining industry projects…one of sustainable development, responsible mining, community engagement, environmental protection, Indigenous participation.

The reality according to Kuyek is that mining comes with enormous long-term financial, environmental and social costs, which are paid by individuals and communities.

Her talk is hosted by NORDIK Institute, Clean North, the Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy, and Algoma’s Water Tower Inn. All are welcome to attend.
