Clean North carries out a computer recycling event for the convenience of city residents and small businesses that would not otherwise have access to the recycling companies because of small amounts of material. Pooling this material in one shipment gives us access to those services. As such, our program is not meant for larger institutions that could fill a truckload of scrap, on their own.
Because we are a charity running a community program, we get the transportation for free as a charitable donation, and we are only charged by the recyclers for the expense of handling monitors, not the rest of the equipment. Our own labour is entirely volunteer. We incur costs for volunteer food and drink, electrical equipment and tools, promotion, and recycling of the monitors, at $6 apiece. If we had to pay the full cost of recycling, we estimate we'd have to charge about $25-30 per computer.
As a secondary purpose, the program is also a fundraiser for Clean North, through resale of still useful equipment, which enables us to keep our downtown office open to serve the public for environment inquiries. We also donate good equipment to charitable organizations. As such, there are a few larger organizations whose drop offs are very welcome as they provide somewhat newer equipment that is still useful in this community.
With the cost to us to recycle monitors, we have to charge people $3 per monitor to drop off, and the city is paying the other half of that cost. We think this is more than fair, given that it costs $6 to drop off at the landfill. This means that our drop off fee doesn't cover any of the other costs we'll incur to put on this program, however, so we are relying on donations to help with that. Your business can decide what would be an appropriate contribution to our costs of handling your waste. To ensure that the program is serving its purposes, we require each business or institution to fill in this contract form and fax it to us (945-0595 fax).
