Happy 2007, Clean North readers! As a present for the new year, I have a brand-new layout for you. Not only that, but the code is improved, which fixes comments and has new anti-spam features. This should be huge and great! Sorry, I'm just really excited. The last layout we created in 2004, up to then we ran with the same layout from 1999. Now, with the release of Internet Explorer 7, I find that our 2004 layout did not render correctly in the new browser. Read on for the rest of the reasoning.
Every other browser on the planet renders it fine, but many of our readers will be using it, so I needed to update our layout. That meant either putting yet more kludges in the old layout (I had kludges already to work with Internet Explorer 6, 5.5, 5.01, and 5.1/Mac. All other browsers support standards and just worked).
Instead of that, I opted to create a simpler layout that doesn't need any kludges yet just works in all browsers (even Internet Explorer 7). Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look the same in all browsers. It certainly looks best in standards-supporting browsers like Firefox, Safari, Konqueror, or Opera, but it will degrade nicely to any version of Internet Explorer.
Side benefit of the whole thing is we upgrade the code that runs this place and are now running Gleipnir 2.0 which gets us some antispam technology for our comments system. Oh, and comments work again too!
Thanks for reading. Have a great new-year, everyone, and keep watching this space!
