Community Bat House Party

This Friday, the 16th, from 6:30 to 9 pm, the lawn (well, the little grassy strip) in front of Canadian Tire is the place to be! It's the Bat House Party we've been working toward. We'll have bat houses for sale, some handy young fellows building more, and lots of information about bats, mosquitoes, and other appealing summer residents. One Little Brown Bat can eat up to 3000 mosquitoes each summer evening, so they're great neighbours to have around! Be a good host and give them a place to stay. Our bat houses will help keep them out of your eaves, too.

Hi. Is this the first year you have done this? If not, do you have any data to verify its effectiveness? We are promoting natural methods of mosquito control in our community and are looking for ideas. thanks!

Hi, this is our first year to do this project, but I've seen conflicting information on the effectiveness of bats for mosquito control. The most balanced single source is an article on Bat Conservation International's webpage, which acknowledges that in some areas bats' effect on mosquito populations is nil, in other areas it's very important. It seems to depend a lot on other aspects of the habitat.

There's a Texas Univ. professor who is a consultant for a pest management company - read, chemicals - who is going around telling people that bats won't eat mozzies if they can get bigger bugs such as moths (thus you still have to spray our chemicals...). But most studies, including a 1970's article published in the journal Ecology, were clear that the Little Brown Bat (our northern Ontario species) eats lots of mosquitoes. The Big Brown Bat, which we don't have here, prefers beetles.

The really nice thing about this project is that bat conservation is a good idea anyhow, most urban areas have reduced habitat values that we can do a lot to improve on, and giving people an easy thing to do to help control WNV will help reduce the panicky feeling people get when something is totally out of their control. Thus helping quell overreactions.

I was just informed about your bat houses last evening. I reside in the Batchwawna (Chippawa River) area and we are having a real problem with Bats getting in uder our eves and "sleeping" there. I had never heard of Bat Houses before and I would love to get several to put on trees in our yard to give them an alternative to "under the siding" of my home. Can I get some and where do I buy them????
