Saturday the main part of the carpeting was put in. Kim the carpet man who volunteered for us, cut, measured, and glued. Don's lads hauled carpet segments and glue buckets, rinsed glue knives, and generally made themselves useful. Peter finished putting backing boards on our big wooden bookshelves (might as well make some improvements while they were cleaned off).

Connie and Alex Gillis and Anne O'Connor brought food for the hungry workers and we had a feast while waiting for glue to get tacky.

Sunday Don brought in another energetic crew, who moved furniture back into place (carefully so as not to disturb the fresh glue). They then emptied out the walk-in storage closet and the front window, and cut carpet pieces for those spots too!

Dan came in and reconnected all the computers, and still more young men arrived in the evening to work with me on putting everything back in its place. We dusted it all, too, before putting things back, so it's nice and clean in there. The library has been reshelved (although Ashley and Andrea H. will be going through it over the next few days to make sure it's all in proper order) and all the stuff for the kitchen area, chairs, window display, etc. is back in its place. We're back in business!

Come in and admire the carpeting! It is wonderful. I am one happy environmentalist!

So what's a green organisation doing laying down carpets, though I do like the idea of a communal cooperative effort.
One of the resons I do or do not do certain things is to set an example. To me one of the most odious and ignorant examples of North American technology other than air conditioning automobile pesticides insecticides white so called presliced bread is the ubiquitous generalcarpet.
Every habitation is carpeted unnecessarily and harmfully. You could have guessed by the mere use and mention of the word glue. No doubt not made of horse bones but some offensive allergenic cardiotoxic mutagenic carcinogenic chemical. If that's bad the carpet is worse.
It emits formaldehyde UF foam etc. It traps dust which essentially consists of insect feces and spipder legs with some cosmic dust mixed in as well as viruses bacteria and bits and pieces of other creatures including humans, snot saliva feces hair skin
carbon partricles etc etc.
This of course necessitates the use of air suckers dust collectors and concentrators called vauum cleaners. They disturb and release these materials from theh carpet fibers. The purpose of carpets is to necessitate the use of vacuum cleaners and electricity.
The environmentally friendly alternative if you are rich is oak parquet or if you are poor linoleum. Those surfaces can be kept clean with a mop or rag or broom avoiding the use of vaccuum cleaners and electricity.
Similar is the use of toaster to burn the otherwise inedible white sliced muck called bread, because its so tasteless and devoid of nutritional value except calories. It has to be burnt before being eaten. Good bread of course doesnt need toasting.
Two unnecessary inventions both electricity hogs vacuum cleaner and toaster. Both to undo two harmful materials carpets and white presliced bread.
So in ten years when the carpet wears out consider linoleum or wooden floor. Throw rugs are OK for these can be beaten outside with a carpet beater or an old tennis raquet. Of course they should be of natural materials, preferably imported from Afghanistan Iraq or Iran.
