Clean Cars? No Such Thing

Here's a link to a diatribe we can all appreciate: the problems with cars won't be solved by those so-called "green" cars, gas/electric hybrids and their ilk. We need better transit, better-designed cities, pedestrian-friendly urban spaces. Enjoy! www.oriononline.org
One Big Point Was Missed...
Well as someone who actually loves high performance cars, motorsports and those filthy internal combustion engines, I for one would lament their passing... Yet as a proponent of green technology, the enviroment and sustainable development, I realize the need for radical change regarding the automobile as well as the cult and culture that has grown-up around it. But one thing that will never change is the individuals need for freedom. And from its inception the automobile has represented, more then anything, the ability to increase ones freedom. Like it or not, this alone means that cars will be with us well into the future. The question then becomes how to green the auto industry, motorsports, and land use patterns... And one rational way is opting for cheap and clean alternative fuels which will get us all, asap, off the consumption of fossil fuels. There is one point the author makes that I have to take issue with. True, today 30% of a current cars consumpton of fuel goes into its construction. This wont be the case in the near future. GM and Ford are now working on platforms that will last 25 to 30 years. Then every 5 to 10 years the owner will purchase a new body and a "green" engine for the platform.
