Canadian Cancer Society Rings in on Pesticides

Kathleen Cooper of the Canadian Environmental Law Association has sent this message: "To those following the movement to ban cosmetic use of pesticides, the following will apparently be posted shortly to the Canadian Cancer Society website and is, I think, a fairly recently framed Canadian Cancer Society position."

Canadian Cancer Society Position - Cosmetic Use of Pesticides

The Canadian Cancer Society does not support the use of carcinogenic chemical pesticides for cosmetic purposes. The Canadian Cancer Society accepts convincing evidence that some commonly used pesticides cause cancer. We call for a ban on the use of chemicals for cosmetic purposes that have been identified by the International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC) as known or probable carcinogens.

The first push to ban such use ought to be directed towards public sector holdings- airports,universities, colleges, federal, provincial, municiple buildings, etc. Then towards firms or businesses that do business with the above.

FINALLY! One thing that would help would be trying to get through to folks that fruit and veggies don't need to look "perfect" to be delicious, as a lot of pesticide use is to provide a "perfect" looking product that consumers demand.

I think yes, if we're looking at 100 apples and we want five, we'll naturally pick the prettiest five. But if we see 100 slightly blemished fruit we'll still pick five, we won't walk away.

The problem with pesticides is vertical integration - if a farmer can only sell her produce to a processing company owned by a conglomerate that also makes pesticides, packages seed, etc., she is stuck - she has to grow those potatoes the way they dictate. She has to apply the chemicals in the prescribed amounts, at the prescribed times, that they say she must, if they are going to buy the potatoes at the end of the season.

Farmers are being put in the position of franchisees on their own land. It's criminal.
