Phone Book Recycling a Go

20 November 2001 – Today Clean North announced that telephone books will once again be collected as part of their annual post-Christmas recycling blitz. "Don't throw your old phone book away when you get your new one this week," said Kathie Brosemer, chair of the environmental group. "We want all the books we can get, and the landfill is no place for them." More, below.

Brosemer added that this is the seventh year that Dial Source Plus, the phone book company, has paid all the costs of the phone book collection. "It's a great example of a company taking responsibility for its product. This program doesn't cost taxpayers a thing," she said.

Sault residents are asked to hold on to their old phone books until just after Christmas, when the Christmas Tree Chipping depot opens in the northwest corner of the Cambrian Mall parking lot. There will be a bin set up to receive phone books there. All phone books, from either company and also phone books from other cities, will be accepted for recycling.

So far, items accepted for recycling will include the usual Christmas trees and telephone books, and new for this year will be a collection of unwanted bikes and bike parts. The Community Bicycle Workshop, which recently received startup funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, is collecting bikes to work on in bike mechanics training programs, and to refurbish and return to the community in numerous ways. "The bike program is an exciting addition to the recycling event," said bike workshop spokesperson Andre Riopel. "Re-Cycle, so someone else can cycle!".

The groups are looking for other materials to collect, and a final list will be available at the recycling event site after Boxing Day. In previous years materials such as corrugated cardboard, office-type paper, household metals, books, blankets, and household goods have been collected for reuse and recycling. Watch this site for details as they develop.

Old Phone books

We just got notice of new phone books being available but were told to throw our old ones in the trash since no one wants to deal with them. It occurred to me that this may be happening all around the city and anyone with access to a company email list could remind their colleagues that Clean North will be collecting them during the tree chipping event.

soo typical

This is so typical of the Sault. It's almost always cheaper (just considering your own wallet in the short term) to throw it in the garbage (i.e. landfill) so why bother to recycle? I get this all the time from business folks.
