Cancer deaths prompt town to test water
DAVIDSON, Sask. -- Concerned about four cases of childhood cancer over the past year, some residents of this small town are paying $7,600 to test their drinking water for cancer-causing chemicals.
Organic farmer Elmer Laird and his supporters spent the weekend collecting three samples from the town's water supply.
The samples will be sent Wednesday to Enviro-Test Laboratories in Saskatoon, which will test the water at a price tag of about $2,546 per sample.
Mr. Laird, president of the environmental group Back to the Farm Research Foundation, said people in Davidson are concerned about why there are four cases of infant cancer in one year in a town of 1,250 people.
