A new study was just released by the Canadian Institute for Business and the Environment, dealing with the economics of seal hunting in Canada. The study found that the federal and provincial governments have taken extraordinary measures to prop up the sealing industry. In spite of that the sealing industry has not been able to generate sufficient revenues to stand on its own in a free enterprise society. Without substantial taxpayer subsidies it would shrink to a small cottage economy for the local people. A free copy of the report, "The Economics of the Canadian Sealing Industry," is downloadable from the website www.canadasealhunt.ca.
