Wolves in Algonquin Need Protection

In less than one month the fate of Algonquin wolves will be decided. On January 15th 2001, recommendations from the Algonquin Wolf Advisory Group (AWAG) were posted to the electronic Environmental Bill of Rights registry for public comment. The goal of AWAG was to devise a conservation plan for Algonquin Park's declining wolf population. Though the report includes important first steps for improving wolf protection, these do not go far enough.

Since the mid 1960's, the population of wolves within Algonquin Park has decreased by half. Hunting, trapping and habitat loss are the primary causes of decline. Though hunting and trapping wolves inside the park boundaries is prohibited, wolves that leave the park can be killed indiscriminately by snares, traps or bullets all year round. There are no quotas or bag limits; there isn't even a requirement to report the number of kills to the Ministry.

In response to AWAG's report and public comments, Minister John Snobelen will decide whether or not to shorten the hunting and trapping season in the townships directly surrounding Algonquin Park.

It has recently been determined that Algonquin wolves are closely related to the endangered red wolf of the Eastern United States. Despite this finding, the Algonquin wolves have not been granted the protection they deserve. Earthroots has called for a fully closed season in all of the townships surrounding the park. This is the only way to ensure the viability of this distinct population of wolves.

There are only a few weeks left for public comment and the hunting and trapping communities are already organizing against any protection measures.
