Between now and Valentine's Day, please show your support for the Duro workers in Rio Bravo, Mexico by sending a Valentine's message to Hallmark. Tell Hallmark: "Sweatshop abuses are no way to say I love you." Visit the Maquila Solidarity Network website to find the downloadable valentine.
Mexican workers who make Hallmark gift bags at the Duro Bag maquiladora factory have been fired, beaten, and arrested for organizing an independent union to win improved working conditions. Duro workers have won the legal registration of their union, but as the time approaches for a union representation election, more workers are being fired, and harassment against workers who remain is increasing.
Hallmark is the Duro factory's biggest customer. It has a code of conduct that supposedly guarantees that these kinds of abuses will not occur at its supply factories. It could put a stop to the firings and harassment today by telling Duro to follow the Hallmark code of conduct and obey Mexican labour law.
To send your Valentine's message to Hallmark, just visit the MSN website and download, fill out, fold and mail your Valentine no later than February 14.
